The wedding photography trends of the year are upon us. For couples planning their wedding in New Zealand this year, you’re in luck—there are so many creative ways to capture your special day. Here are six wedding trends that you should consider incorporating into your big day that will have everyone turning heads and leave you with images that are OUT OF THIS WORLD and super unique!

Colourful Bridesmaids Dresses

Say goodbye to traditional bridesmaids dresses! In 2023, it is all about celebrating individuality and diversity in the colour of the dresses. Instead of one colour that matches the bride, why not opt for an array of different hues? I’m seeing you a lot of pastels and ‘baby’ colours in particular and I am here for it! This will ensure that each bridesmaid stands out and looks their best on your special day.

Flash Photography – during the day!

Now, us photographers obviously need to use a flash for the evening part of your wedding day but something that I am seeing more of is flash photography during the day of your wedding and I am loving what I am seeing. My photography style is very on-location and natural light but I love the fact that I can enhance my film-vibe by utilising the flash during your ceremony for example. This makes for super unique ceremony images and giving that ‘point and shoot’ disposable film camera look.

Retro Wedding Cakes & Bouquets

Retro is making a comeback in a big way for 2023. For example, think bold floral arrangements and statement cake designs that take inspiration from vintage style. If you’re looking for something unique and eye-catching, consider incorporating retro elements into your wedding décor.

Sweet Stems – Florist

I have an amazing vendor that can help you incorporate at least one of these amazing wedding trends to your wedding day. Meet Emma from Sweet Stems, Whakatane. A wedding florist, dried flower lover and grower of a micro flower farm in Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty.

“Working with nature is truly amazing! My wedding designs generally represent what you would find in a garden. Asymmetrical shapes and organic in style. I love to work within a colour palette so my mind can dream and search within the season for that perfect texture and hue.

In the lead up to your day you can expect to meet with me in person at a local cafe, to casually chat about all things floral, with a coffee in hand of course! I will advise and guide you in piecing together all the finer details for your day. Think – colour palette, scents, time of year, ambience, and your personal style….when it comes to weddings, your options are endless!

Props

Props are a fun way to add some personality to your wedding photos and give them an extra wow factor. Think umbrellas, balloons, cute signs and funky sunglasses—the possibilities are endless! Incorporate props into posed and candid shots with the bridal party or keep them more subtle by adding them as decorations around your venue or reception area. This adds a super fun element to your wedding photographs and is something that will stand out from the crowd!

Motion Blurred Images

Now… this is a trend I have really jumped on. This look encourages a very candid style of shooting. My style has never been about the static, posed images but rather the free-moving imagery where it looks much more like a very true moment captured in time. With motion-blurred photographs you will be sure to have images that express a super fun-loving element. That feels a lot more in-the-moment than anything else.

Unconventional Venues

If you’re looking for something truly unique when it comes to capturing your big day on camera, why not consider an unconventional venue? This could be anything from getting married in an extravagant city library or having a photoshoot at a local museum—the world is literally your oyster! You could even go for something like an airplane hangar or brewery. These types of venues give us photographers plenty of interesting angles to work with and will guarantee some one-of-a-kind photos that you won’t find anywhere else!

So forget about traditional venues like churches or banquet halls – alternative venues are where it’s at in 2023! But at the end of the day, no matter what kind of venue you choose, make sure it reflects your personalities and individual style as a couple. This is whats most important 🙂

Whatever trends you decide to incorporate into your wedding photography session, don’t forget that most importantly it’s about capturing memories that will last forever so make sure it’s something special—something uniquely yours and take these trends into consideration when planning out how you want photographs taken of your big day; they might just inspire something totally new and exciting! Good luck! It’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.
