Celebrating Milestones with a Winter Family Photoshoot

Winter in the Coastal Bay of Plenty is seriously magical! With the fresh air, calm beaches, and soft sunlight, it is the perfect setting for some milestone documenting. I recently had a beautiful morning taking photos of Rochelle, Stephen, and their nearly 1-year-old daughter, Ruby, in Ōhope. This wasn’t just any photo op; it was their first family portrait as a trio! We had so much fun, and the vibes were all about the joy and love of a brand new unit.

Why Winter Photoshoots Are Special

Most people shy away from winter photoshoots, and I get it! But I would love to change your perception on that. Yes, it is chilly but there is honestly something very cute about the extra layers paired with those little red noses and cheeks. Winter has this magical way of wrapping everything in a cozy, warm vibe, making you feel nostalgic like you’re in a holiday movie. The natural lighting is softer and very flattering, adding a timeless quality to each photograph. For Rochelle and Stephen, this winter photoshoot was not only about capturing their first portrait as a family of three but also about celebrating Ruby’s upcoming first birthday!

The Story Behind the Lens

I understand that a family photo session can be a bit daunting, especially if it’s your first time! But under my guidance, I can assure you that you will have a great time! Let me share with you Rochelle’s kind words after her experience:

“These photos are the most treasured things ever in my life already. Honestly, you’ve done amazing. And what’s cool is we had so much fun doing it, so it’s also like looking back at a great memory knowing we were genuinely having a good time.”

Her feedback is a testament to the power of just capturing those joyful moments. We spent the morning playing by the beach and every shot was a blend of those candid and posed portraits, showcasing their love.

Tips for a Successful Winter Family Photoshoot

If you’re considering a winter family photoshoot in the Bay of Plenty, here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Dress in layers: Winter weather can be unpredictable. Layers will keep you warm, and you can always remove outer layers for different looks!
  • Coordinate outfits: Soft, neutral colours always work well with my editing style; but don’t be afraid to add those fun pops of colour too! Think cozy knit jerseys, scarves, and cute beanies.
  • Choose the right time: Early-morning or Late afternoon will always provide the most flattering light.
  • Incorporate props: Blankets, hats, and even a thermos of hot chocolate can add a cozy touch to your photos 😍
